The World Café Training

15 & 16 June, 2019

Lamda Project, Athens, Greece

How can The World Café change my personal practice, organisation or community?

The World Café is a powerful social technology for engaging people in conversations that matter, offering an effective antidote to the fast-paced fragmentation and lack of connection in today’s world. Based on the understanding that conversation is the core process that drives personal, business, and organizational life, the World Café is more than a method, a process, or technique – it’s a way of thinking and being together sourced in a philosophy of Conversational Leadership. Conversational leadership takes root when leaders see their organizations as dynamic webs of conversation and consider conversation as a core process for effecting positive systemic change. Taking a strategic approach to this core process can not only grow intellectual and social capital, but also provide a collaborative advantage in our increasingly networked world.

In Greece, AoHAthina has been offering the Art of Participatory Leadership Trainings for the past eight years, bringing a new form of leadership where collaboration and participation open new possibilities. In addition, The World Café Hellas Group has been practicing and translating The World Café book, recognizing that through Collaborative Leadership, we can bring generative change to how our companies, organisations, schools, etc. A community of practice is emerging, calling in new practices that shift leadership from the individual or hero to the collective.

AoHAthina, in partnership with The World Café are bringing this two-day training to Greece so that people can learn how this simple yet powerful approach can bring change to personal practice, organisations and communities. We invite, teachers, managers, social entrepreneurs, people working in companies, civil society organisations, civil servants, students, etc. to join us in this participative and experiential training. The training aims at providing you with the foundational aspects so that you can apply the World Café in different contexts and for different purposes.

Over the two days we will learn:

  • The story of The World Café and how the impact it has made
  • The philosophy and theory on which it is based on
  • The principles of the World Café
  • The conditions that are needed for application
  • Coaching on how you might apply this in your context

We will cover these areas by working with The World Café as well as other participatory processes.

Amy Lenzo - As Director of Communications for the World Café Community Foundation, Amy is responsible for designing and overseeing the World Café’s virtual communications infrastructure (website, online community, newsletters, blog, social media, etc.) as well as supporting the spread of great ideas in the World Café book, including 13 translations world-wide into Japanese, mainland Chinese, Taiwanese, Korean, Turkish, Spanish, Thai, Portuguese, and German. We're currently working with a wonderful Greek translation team for the latest edition.

Amy Lenzo is a pioneer in hosting interactive World Cafés online. She and her team have found that it’s not only possible to create the warm hospitable space of a World Café experience in a virtual environment, but the medium actually offers many advantages.

Last, but not least, Amy Lenzo is the World Café's core team liaison for the World Café Signature Learning Program series we launched in June, 2011. She has developed the online presentation for these programs and is responsible for co-hosting and producing Introduction to the World Café, and Hosting World Cafes: The Fundamentals, which is currently being offered in partnership with Fielding Graduate University.

Maria Scordialos – Maria has a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) from Southampton University, UK. She grew up in the international environment of the United Nations, living in Congo, Guinea, India, Nepal, and the United States.

Maria’s work focuses on creating participatory processes that invite people from all backgrounds to have conversations that matter. Maria’s practice of participatory leadership has been inspired by her diverse experience. She worked as a Corporate Director in Local Government in the UK, founded her own successful consulting company since 2002, co-initiated the Art of Hosting, a worldwide network of participatory leadership which is being practiced in contexts such as the European Commission, FMO Entrepreneurial Bank as well as in local social innovation initiatives. Maria is also a social entrepreneur hosting a rural place of learning and sustainable practice with nature in Greece, Axladitsa-Avatakia and a co-founder of AoHAthina, a social enterprise bringing participatory leadership practices to Greece.
